Case 4 Keel

Inspections were carried out on a 13.41 meter GRP racing yacht using thermal imaging and ultrasound to identify the damage where she had run aground at speed. International Yacht Surveys was requested by an insurance company and boatyard to carry out inspections of the damaged yacht on behalf of the owner.

The damage incurred was to the keel, keel laminates and internal keel frames. The leading edge of the keel has a crack on the keel to hull join. The laminates around the keel looked normal to the naked eye with no bulging or broken keel hull laminates. Ultrasound and Thermal Imaging around the hull keel laminates confirmed there was delamination around the keel laminates.

Inside the yacht thermal imaging and ultrasound was used to confirm delamination had occurred to the structural internal keel frames and hull laminates.
The frames were removed along with the keel hull laminates, all keel frames and keel laminates were replaced.
